Hal itu terjadi kerana orang Israel berdosa terhadap Tuhan Allah mereka yang telah menuntun mereka keluar dari Tanah Mesir daripada genggaman Firaun raja Mesir Mereka menyembah tuhan-tuhan lain

Melainkan kamu harus bertakwa kepada Tuhan sahaja yang telah menuntun kamu keluar dari Tanah Mesir dengan kuasa yang besar dan dengan tangan yang terhulur Kepada-Nyalah kamu harus sujud menyembah dan kepada-Nyalah kamu harus mempersembahkan korban
