Ahazia berumur dua puluh dua tahun ketika dia menaiki takhta dan dia bertakhta di Yerusalem selama satu tahun Nama ibunya ialah Atalya anak Omri raja Israel

Apabila Atalya ibu Ahazia melihat bahawa anaknya sudah mati maka dibunuhnya segera semua keturunan raja

2 Kings 11:2

Tetapi salah seorang anak Raja Yoram iaitu Yoseba saudara perempuan Ahazia mengambil Yoas anak Ahazia dan membawanya pergi dengan diam-diam daripada kalangan anak-anak raja yang hendak dibunuh itu Yoseba memasukkan dia bersama inang penyusunya ke dalam bilik tidur dan menyembunyikan dia dari Atalya sehingga dia tidak terbunuh

2 Kings 11:3

Yoas tetap bersembunyi dengannya di Bait Tuhan selama enam tahun sementara Atalya bertakhta atas negeri itu

Ketika Atalya mendengar suara para bentara dan rakyat pergilah dia mendatangi rakyat di Bait Tuhan

Dilihatnya raja berdiri dekat tiang menurut kebiasaan sementara para pemimpin dan para peniup nafiri berdiri di sisinya Seluruh rakyat negeri bersuka ria sambil meniup nafiri tetapi Atalya mengoyakkan pakaiannya sambil berseru Pengkhianatan Pengkhianatan

2 Kings 11:20

Seluruh rakyat negeri bersuka ria dan kota itu pun sentosa setelah Atalya dibunuh dengan pedang di istana raja

Tetapi Yosabat anak perempuan Raja Yoram mengambil Yoas anak Ahazia dan membawanya pergi dengan diam-diam daripada kalangan anak raja yang hendak dibunuh itu Yosabat iaitu isteri Imam Yoyada dan saudara Ahazia memasukkan Yoas bersama inang penyusunya ke dalam bilik tidur Demikianlah Yosabat menyembunyikan Yoas daripada Atalya sehingga tidak dibunuh oleh Atalya

Setelah dia mengamat-amati tampaklah raja berdiri dekat tiang di pintu masuk sementara para pemimpin dan peniup nafiri ada di sisi raja Seluruh rakyat negeri bersuka ria sambil meniup nafiri sedangkan para penyanyi dengan alat-alat muzik mereka menjadi pemimpin puji-pujian Maka Atalya mengoyakkan pakaiannya sambil berseru Penderhakaan Penderhakaan

Kerana anak-anak Atalya perempuan fasiq itu telah membongkar Rumah Allah bahkan menggunakan semua barang suci Bait Tuhan untuk para Baal
