Hesbon ialah kota kediaman Sihon raja bani Amori Dia pernah berperang melawan raja Moab yang terdahulu dan merebut seluruh negeri itu daripada tangannya sampai ke Arnon

Malangnya kamu hai Moab Binasalah kamu hai umat Kamos Dia membuat anak-anak lelakinya menjadi pelarian dan anak-anak perempuannya menjadi tawanan bagi Sihon raja bani Amori

Demikianlah orang Israel tinggal di negeri bani Amori

Kemudian Musa mengutus orang untuk mengintip Yaezer lalu mereka berhasil merebut kota-kota kecil di sekitarnya dan mengusir mana-mana bani Amori yang ada di sana

Tetapi Tuhan berfirman kepada Musa Jangan takut kepadanya kerana Aku telah menyerahkan dia dan seluruh pasukannya ke dalam tanganmu bahkan seluruh negerinya Lakukanlah terhadapnya sebagaimana kamu lakukan terhadap Sihon raja bani Amori yang tinggal di Hesbon

Maka apabila terdengar oleh semua raja bani Amori yang tinggal di sebelah barat Sungai Yordan dan semua raja bani Kanaan yang tinggal di tepi laut perihal Tuhan mengeringkan Sungai Yordan di hadapan orang Israel sehingga orang Israel dapat menyeberang maka tawarlah hati mereka dan mereka tidak lagi bersemangat menghadapi orang Israel
